Big Boy

We were pretty lucky to live so close to where the BIG BOY train was making one of its stops! It stopped in Modena on its big trek through the western states.
A little about Big Boy Steam Engine, eight Big Boys survive, with most on static display at museums across the country. One of them, No. 4014, was re-acquired by Union Pacific and restored to operating condition in 2019, regaining the title as the largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world and this is the one we got to see! It was incredibly awesome!
Waiting for the train!
Camille just playing in the dirt!
We didn't wait very long and then it came huffing and puffing to a stop in Modena!
We were able to go right up to it! The kids all touched it!

The kids liked walking on the track!
They had us step back as they pulled it forward a little bit so they could continue to do a little maintenance on it!
Working on the train!
To have them stop the train is fascinating and then to get it going again is just as cool!
Taking a break from the crowd of people!
Getting started back up to get ready to roll again!
In 2019, Union Pacific completed the restoration of No. 4014, and placed it in excursion serviceThe locomotive was sent on a tour in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
And just like that it was gone and headed to the next stop on the tour!
After the Big Boy left we headed up to Hamlin Valley to find a place to picnic!
We were all starving!

After we ate we did a little exploring around where we were at, it had a little run down town from back in the day, it was a old mining town and most the buildings are falling apart but we love checking out old places like these and thinking about what the people did or how they lived!
This structure was so small the kids thought it was just their size!
This was such a fun great day!
